Organic
Gardening Pod
Nature empowers children and adults alike. We endeavor to
share our
knowledge of organic gardening in the hopes that all will
feel the
delight of eating food that is grown without pesticides and
enjoy
flowers grown without toxic fertilizers. Research has shown
that
participating in the natural world through gardening
enhances a sense
of well-being, health, and interconnectedness to our planet.
It is our
desire to enhance the well-being of each individual and the
Earth
through teaching and exchanging concepts in green
living.
The ORGANIC GARDENING POD is involved in creating awareness of the
principles of organic gardening. Our goal is to make available to
the
public, workshops, classes and projects that demonstrate such methods
as building healthy soil, composting, using natural fertilizers
and
organic pesticides, crop rotation, companion planting, wildlife
friendly plantings, water management and hardscape planning. In this
way we intend to help residents of St. Johns county become
aware of
the feasibility of organic gardening in their own homes. We desire
to
create a network with the community and look forward to instituting
an
organic cooperative community garden in the near future. One
of our
dreams is to see such cooperative gardens throughout St. Johns county
and we welcome any ideas, insights or resources we can gather to this
end. It is our hope to bring organic gardening
information to both
public and private school systems as well, helping children to value
where food comes come from and by extension the Earth itself.
Additionally we hope to start an organic seed and cutting exchange
as
well as tool and product sharing system.
We have been working in partnership, since May
of 2005, creating an
organic Therapeutic Memorial Healing Garden with the Coastal Community
Council on Aging Center in St. Augustine. The opening ceremony will
be in May 2006.
Volunteers are always welcome and appreciated
for all our gardening
endeavors. You can become a member of the NLA and/or just come out
to
support each project as it happens. Please look to the Calendar of
Events section on this site to learn about all the Organic Garden
pod
meetings and activities. We also have photos of our workdays posted
on
the Photo
Gallery section.
Please feel free to contact us with questions
or information.
